Hi, Estel.

I can tell you the policy at Oxford Street Daycare, which I assume is
similar for the other centers.

You sign a contract for one year, and if you leave early you agree to
help the center find a replacement family for your slot. If you are
not able to find a replacement family, you are liable for the monthly
tuition until the slot is filled. As Susannah said, for budgeting
reasons the centers need some guarantee of tuition revenue in order to
pay their bills and keep things running so they try to avoid unfilled
slots at all costs.

I have heard that on occasion people who know for sure they are only
going to be living in the area for part of the year will work out an
agreement with a director and sign a less-than-one-year contract, but
I think that this is usually for preschool slots which are harder to
fill with full-time kids.

That said, there has been a lot of turnover at Oxford Street this
year, with quite a few families leaving mid-semester. They have all
worked with the center to find replacement families. Given the
shortage of good daycare, it's not impossible to find replacement
families, but you bear the risk.

hope this helps!

Elizabeth
