[Parentsgroup-list] Summer programs for older kids

Dear Richra,

As the mom of an almost 12 year old, I know of no full-day 4-day a week
options for older kids. Most programs are 5 days, with hours about 9-4,
with options for early or late care (for extra $). And they are all
very pricey.

The cheapest summer camps are run at the Cambridge public schools, but
they may only go to 6th grade (check the city of Cambridge web site).
Tufts, the Museum of Science, and Harvard run summer classes for middle
school kids. Tufts also has a drama program. Check the appropriate web
sites.

Many, if not most, local day camps take children aged 12 and up as
"counselors in training" which usually involves a combination of working
with a college-age counselor to supervise younger kids, and some
activities for the older kids. There is a fee, which is sometimes (but
not always) less than the regular day camp fee. Camps I know of with
such programs include: Arlington Center for the Arts, MIT day camp
(accessible by T or Harvard shuttle from Harvard Square), and Passport
(located at Cambridge Montessori). I'm sure there are others. My
daughter is a CIT at Passport this week, and loves it. I would google
"CIT" and Cambridge and see what pops up.

I've heard that for something like $1, your kids can join Community
Boating along the Charles on the Boston side, and basically hang out all
day any day they'd like, learning to sail. Sounds almost too good to be
true, but it might be a fun way for your kids to meet other kids, and a
very cost-effective way to give them something to do, and low-key
supervision Monday - Thursday. Check out their website (and if you do
try it, I'd love to hear about it)

Usually it would be difficult to find spaces at this late date, but
camps seem to be having trouble filling up slots this summer due to the
economy, and you may find room.

Good luck!

Kara
