For people living in Cambridge, you may also want to look into the Agassiz
Neighborhood Preschool at 20 Sacramento Street. They give scholarships to
families who need it (they gave us 50% for a three-day-a-week 8:00-2:30
schedule). We're putting our three-year-old there starting in September. I
think they may still have a few openings left.

Subject: [Parentsgroup-list] details, such as they are,on child care

Hi all,

Here you go--from the horse's mouth. They don't know the details yet, but
there will be money available next year for people with kids in the
Harvard-affiliated day care centers. This seems (I hope) to be just a
starting point--they can't make the funding 'portable' yet to other
providers, since that's a whole different kettle of fish. But it's a

I still don't know how much these are going to be, by the way--let's hope
it's enough to make a real difference. I also doubt there will be any
change to the standard 12-month contract, so keep in mind that you are
committing to paying for 12 months a year even if you don't use the place
in the summer. And the standard 9-5 day will also probably be in place,
though some have half days available.

The way it will work is that first you apply to the centers and then if
you get in, you apply through the center to get the aid--it will be
administered by each place separately, not through Harvard. (God bless
Harvard's decentralization...)

So if you're interested, I highly recommend getting on waiting lists
*right away.* If you already have a kid/kids in a Harvard center, you are
halfway there. (There are about 30 kids of grad students in the centers
right now.)

BTW, Miriam is one of our members who wrote from Bolivia...thanks for the
prodding, Miriam!

Dear Miriam,

I am the manager of the Office of Work/Life Resources, and am
responding to your email on behalf of Mary Ann O'Brien. First, let me
say that I am delighted that our good news has traveled as far as
Bolivia! My office is being flooded with questions like yours, and
that is a very good problem to have, indeed.

We are planning a program to assist students pursuing doctorates with
affording the high cost of child care in Cambridge. The funding is
designated for our six Harvard-affiliated child-care centers, with a
goal of increasing the enrollment of children of doctoral students in
these on-site, high quality programs. The link to the centers is:
http://employment.harvard.edu/benefits/worklife/centers.shtml . There
you will find information about the centers, including regular program

We are still working out the details on the delivery of these funds,
and you may be assured that you will be notified when we have
everything in place. We are working closely with GSAS on this, and
you can expect news either from my office, or from GSAS, or both! We
hope to communicate the necessary details by September, if not sooner.

Thanks for your interest. We are all looking forward to being able to
give greater support to doctoral students here at Harvard.
