Ma Ying-jeou's election in March of 2008 was seen by many commentators as
the beginning of a new era in cross-strait relations. During this past
January, members of the Taiwan Workshop at the Fairbank Center met with Ma
as well as with policy-makers and analysts on both sides of the strait to
assess the impact which his election has had on that relationship nearly two
years into his first term. Moreover, with the controversy in Taiwan over
American beef as well as the imminent announcement of Washington's arms
sales to the island, the group's discussions in both Beijing and Taipei also
focused on the direction and impact of United States policy under the Obama
administration. In its annual report to the community on the group's January
visit, participants will present their impressions of these discussions and
assess what they might reveal about the attitudes that will shape future
developments in the region.
