BASF Future Business

Turning Trends into Business

Dr. Stefan Becker

Wednesday, August 11 | 10:00 am | Pierce 209

BASF Future Business GmbH opens up new areas of business for BASF, the chemical industrys leading player. By analyzing long-term trends in industry or society and by forming partnerships in early stage projects with universities, institutes or other companies Future Business develops new areas of competence for BASF. It fundamentally supports technological change by developing new products as well as new business models in areas such as energy, electronics and health. Stefan Becker will introduce examples from several areas and focus in particular on the activities in medical device materials. New functional materials for medical application do not only improve the standard of medical care for an aging population, but also address important economic needs such as the cost pressure in the healthcare system. Polymeric materials able to prevent dangerous and costly hospital acquired infections are an important example.

Stefan Becker is a Senior Manager of BASF Future Business GmbH and is leading the business development for medical device materials. He received a PhD from the university of Mainz (Germany) working on functional polymer materials with Professor Klaus Muellen at the Max-Planck-Institute for Polymer Research. He joined BASF AG in 2001, initially in Polymer Research, moving later to a position in the Global Product Development for Construction Chemicals, before he continued his career in BASF Future Business in 2008.
