**How Long is the Road (2009)*
Directed by *Tang Shiang-chu*

*How Long is the Road**,* a documentary by Taiwanese director Tang
Shiang-chu, follows the story of Siki Sufin, an Amis sculptor, as he traces
the history of Taiwanese Aborigines who served as soldiers for the
Kuomintang. Starting with the Dulan tribe of Taitung, he interviews veterans
and then travels to mainland China in search of those who never returned
from war. Many of the Amis who stayed in China have lost their ties to
Taiwan and their tribes, but Siki locates one man, Citamih, who has
dedicated himself to preserving the Amis’ tales and language. Siki’s journey
culminates with a stop at Chenguanzhuang in Henan, where many Taiwanese
soldiers lost their lives. Upon returning to Taiwan, Siki completes a wooden
sculpture to commemorate his tribe’s loss. This film stands as a testament
to the many untold stories of Taiwan’s Aborigines. *How Long is the Road* was
selected for the 2009 Taipei Film Festival and the 2009 DMZ (Demilitarized
Zone) Korean International Documentary Festival.
