*There is no neat distinction between operating system software and the
software that runs on top of it.* To be a good programmer, it is incredibly
important to understand how everything on your computer works, down to the
nitty-gritty of your operating system.
tl;dr CS 161 may not be offered this year; take *this poll
<https://goo.gl/forms/634h0SeJtKYJMcGp2>* to let us know if you would take
it if Professor Eddie Kohler taught it in Spring 2018.
You may or may not have heard that Professor James Mickens, who usually
teaches Harvard's operating systems class (CS 161), will not be teaching CS
161 this year. Fortunately, Professor Eddie Kohler said he may teach the
course in the spring, but only if there is sufficient interest from the
students. *If we can get a group of around 20 students who would almost
certainly take CS 161 in the spring, it may be offered this year!*
There was already a similar poll on the CS Undergraduates Piazza, but it
was missed by most students, so *here is yet another poll*
<https://goo.gl/forms/634h0SeJtKYJMcGp2>. Eddie is an amazing professor who
genuinely cares about what and who he teaches, and he has taught CS 61 for
multiple years. While an operating systems course may be difficult, it
would be well worth the effort put into it.
Please take the time to let us know if you would take CS 161 if taught by
Professor Eddie Kohler. *If you know anyone who may be interested in CS
161, please forward this email to them. *Feel free to email me if you have
