Discover Ukrainian firsthand with the Dudley Ukrainian Language Table!
Ukrainian is one of the most melodic and beautiful languages of the world. It traces its origins to the Old Slavic language of the early medieval state of Kyivan Rus'. In its earlier stages it was known as Ruthenian. Ukrainian is a lineal descendant of the colloquial language used in Kyivan Rus (10th–13th century).
The language has persisted despite several periods of bans, discouragement or both throughout centuries as it has always maintained a sufficient base among the people of Ukraine, its folklore songs, itinerant musicians, and prominent authors. Ukrainian is the official state language of Ukraine, a nation of over 46 million people, and a recognized minority language in Croatia, Romania, Slovakia, Poland, and Serbia.
The Ukrainian Language Table at Harvard is run by the Harvard Ukrainian Student Society. The main idea of this initiative is to provide to interested members of the Harvard community an opportunity to practice their Ukrainian in an informal setting.
Your level of command is not important, the main idea is to converse and to understand each other. However, if you would like to know more about the structure of Ukrainian grammar or clarify some questions about colloquial Ukrainian, I will be happy to help you!
Frequency, time, and place of our meetings are decided based on the availability of people who sign up for the table.
We would also like to draw your attention to the Ukrainian language courses offered by the Slavic Department. Please direct your questions re. the courses to Dr. Volodymyr Dibrova, the Preceptor in Ukrainian, at vdibrova(at)fas.harvard.edu
